For the longest time, I was under the impression that SUNTRACS was a kind of chips. "OK" I'd say to friends arguing so vehemently over them. "So they're healthy and all. But is it really worth shouting over a baked snack?" As I would soon come to find out, SUNTRACS are not a kind of chips, but rather a labor union in Panama surrounding which two deaths have recently made the headlines. I have proven myself over and over again to be fairly amateurish when it comes to current events or noteworthy news bits, so the heart of what pissed me off about SUNTRACS was not their political standing, but rather why they were messing up my commute into the City.Upon first glance, I thought the SUNTRACS guys in Plaza Independencia were celebrating a Phillies win. They were dressed in red and white and after congratulating them on the game, I politely asked if I could drive through. Turned out the answer was No, and I sat there, for maybe thirty minutes watching them dance around like animals. This was a strike against a death on Viveros Island in the Pearl Islands in which one of the worker protestors was killed. They have been holding manifestaciones or protests everywhere since, and they especially like the Presidential Palace here in Casco Antiguo. If you happen to run into one of these protests when you're in Panama City, stay as far away from them as possible. They're not giving away free chips! |
