Plaza Catedral, also known as Plaza Mayor or Plaza Independencia, is one of our favorite open areas in Casco Viejo. It's surrounded by a church, several museums, and a couple of government agencies along with one of our favorite restaurants Rene Cafe.

The picturesque gazebo in the center is the perfect place to sit at sundown and enjoy a glass of wine: watching children kick around soccer balls and families chat on park benches. Also fronting Plaza Catedral is the famous Hotel Central: once a burgeoning hotel and now in restoration mode: set to open to the public in a few years.
