Part of the allure about staying with us in Casco Viejo is the window into life like a local. You won’t be toted around by any tour bus, taxis won’t heckle you when you step out the door, restaurants won’t automatically give you the gringo menu in English. This immersion into Casco Viejo life is multi-faceted in its charm: you’ll sense the district’s historical past, you’ll grasp the current wave of energy and development, and when you leave you’ll remember Panama City, not for its tacky casinos or cheap clothing shops, but for the authentic and sustainable way about life in the old quarter.
As a service, we like to take it upon ourselves here at Los Cuatro Tulipanes, to make this immersion as complete and comfortable as possible. You’ll stay in luxury apartments, in buildings occupied by long-time locals for example, you’ll have your own maid taking care of the apartment. And now, to add to this experience, we’re offering “dining like a local” to our repertoire. Simply give us a heads up one day in advance and we’ll have a traditional Panamanian cooking you dinner in your apartment.
The cost is $30 (plus the price of food) and it’s payable in cash, directly to the cook. While anything is feasible for the menu, guests like to opt for a traditional Panamanian spread.
What’s a typical Panamanian dinner consist of? There’s generally a light salad or two, the traditional sancocho (chicken soup), some rice and beans, and a protein (chicken, pork, beef, fish…etc). With the fish market so close, we highly recommend choosing a fish or shellfish option done in simple Panamanian style (garlic, oil, and some herbs). Vegetables like avocados are abundant here as are fruits such as pineapple, melons, and passion fruit (which can be nice for dessert).
If you’re interested in more of a fine dining experience, let us know too and we’ll contact someone who’s up to the task. Our down home cooking is the most popular because of its value and originality: which translates to you just sitting back with a glass of wine and waiting until everything’s ready.
