Arriving back to Casco Viejo after trips home or abroad, I’m constantly reinvigorated and reminded of how fast the neighborhood is evolving. When settled and comfortable in a set of surroundings, it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture, to look over the small details of progress and development. But in returning after a week or month abroad, the changes often hit me like a new fad.
Just beside our favorite gourmet deli called Super Gourmet in Cacso Viejo, is a space that used to be occupied by a number of media publications. It’s now been announced that the space will be converted into an internet café and ice cream shop, the former of which Cacso Viejo has so desperately needed. It’s funny to live in a neighborhood in the modern world that doesn’t have an internet café: an exclusion that constantly reminds us that Casco is not just any neighborhood but a truly evolutionary one. One that’s ever changing.
The bars and nightlife scene too is changing and getting really fun. I remember the days when your options for food or drink were limited to a small handful of places and while there is certainly not as much variety here as in the City proper, options are expanding…fast.
Segafredo, the posh espresso bar we know and love in Multi Plaza mall is rumored to be opening up shop in the space on Plaza Bolivar next to Ego. Havana café is now in full swing and the restaurant chain Tomato is also supposedly coming in around Calle 2. More and more investors these days are looking for commercial type real estate to do either a hotel or offices or restaurants, which is great for the neighborhood. Still, the small businesses like us here at Los Cuatro Tulipanes, Cafe Per Due, and Super Gourmet are enjoying their position as one-of-a-kind establishments.
While it’s easy to get comfortable in a new and niche market, there’s also the constant ring of development that you’re reminded of when taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture. It’s this ring that gives excitement to the air, a new and stimulating aspect of life in Casco.
