Things to See/Do Around Casco Viejo:
Guided Tour of Casco Viejo: This is a must do! You are staying in Casco Viejo and even if you read every written article you can find on Casco Viejo, that wouldn’t be enough. This is the most storied and interesting place in all of Panama City so you should, actually we DEMAND that, you take a tour of your new neighborhood. This is a great way to learn about this area from a elder local lady who knows Casco Viejo inside and out. Please let us know and we will contact a tour operator for you. The cost is approximately $40 total for a 2-3 hour walking tour.
Miraflores Locks: The canal locks is an engineering triumph. A Panama must do! Our suggestion is to go in the afternoon and watch the ships go through the locks while seated at the restaurant enjoying your lunch. The restaurant and museum close at about 4 PM.
Mercado de Mariscos (Fish Market). The absolute freshest seafood can be found here at Panama’s fish market where you can either take your pick from the restaurant’s menu or purchase your choice of seafood downstairs to have prepared upstairs according to your instructions. Please be forewarned that this is a bit of an experience and not recommended for those that are dying of hunger or have to have A/C. Reason being, this place is a bit muggy, smells of fish and slow service reigns supreme… Overwhelming for some, but for the adventurous, stop by and give it a look.
Additionally, check out the view from Cerro Ancon (Ancon Hill) of the whole city from above or cruise around the Amador Causeway for shopping, restaurants and bars that offers spectacular views of the modern city and its skyscrapers from afar.
