![]() Building DetailsCasa Méndez is a beautiful building consisting of two stories that date back to the XIX century. Walk through its doors and admire the old stone wall and intricately tiled floor. You will be staying less than a block from Plaza Bolivar with its trendy outdoor restaurants and breezy evenings: the perfect place to do a crossword puzzle or have a late afternoon glass of wine. The block on which Casa Méndez is located has been in-use since 1673, only a few years after the foundation of the new City of Panamá. Although the exact date of construction of the current edifice is unknown, we know that a building did indeed exist in its precise location around the year 1850. Because this house was not affected by the fire of 1878, we can confirm that construction took place in the XIX century. The façade, however, judging from the morphology of the openings and the balcony, was probably remodeled around 1915. The house is closely linked to influential Panamanian families of the time. The first known proprietors were Mr. Juan José Méndez, born in Andalusia, and Mrs. Mercedes García de Paredes. She was the daughter of Mr. José García de Paredes and Mrs. Dolores de la Barrera y Urriola's, who were extremely prominent families of the colonial time. The residence later became property of descendants of the Méndez family until the middle of the XX century. The building boasts an excellent location, situated beside Hotel Central, a future six-star hotel, and the Church Felipe Neri which is the oldest church of Casco Antiguo (a church which is to be re-opened to the public as soon as the restoration process has been completed). Across the street facing Casa Méndez is the Condominium Callejón del Chicheme, and diagonal to the property is Casa Góngora, both of which have been recently restored. |
